Reminder: Slough Country Ramble this Saturday, February 22nd

Hello friends! Looks like we are in for a week of dry weather. Hopefully this will stick around through the weekend for this Saturday's Slough Country Ramble! This approximately 15 mile ride will feature sleepy reaches of this waterway, plus other secret spots. Not a loop but will end near transit/food/beverages. We’ll meet at Parkrose/Sumner Transit… Continue reading Reminder: Slough Country Ramble this Saturday, February 22nd

Three Speed Day Tour: Saturday April 18

Society Of Three Speeds

Despite not doing the Adventure April Challenge this year, there will still be three speed fun here in Portland! The Day Tour to Oregon City returns for Saturday, April 18.

It’s time for a lovely day tour on three speed bicycles! Destination: Oregon City, where we can have a fine lunch, use America’s favorite municipal elevator, tour the promenade, and see the Falls. Then we ride back to Portland. Lovely!

This ride is open to all bikes that have a three speed internal geared hub. Hub and bike can be of any age and from any country. We also accept four and five speed internal geared hubs, but nothing larger. No derailleur equipped bicycles unless: a) it is on a Brompton or b) derailleur acts as chain tensioner.

You do not need to be a member of Society of Three Speeds to be on the ride. If you are not…

No Three Speed Adventure April for 2020

Society Of Three Speeds

Hello, friends of Three Speeds. Right about now is when I’m usually seriously thinking about the Three Speed Adventure April Challenge. But after some contemplation, I am not going to be doing this challenge in 2020. I’ll still do Three Speed October, but for now, consider a separate challenge in April off the table. (There will still be a local Three Speed Tour here in Portland that month, details soon.)

When I started the challenges back in 2016, it was a way to generate fun and interest in three speeds outside of the Portland area. For years, I had heard from folks that they liked the idea of Society of Three Speeds, but were hesitant to join since they couldn’t go on one of my rides. So, a challenge open to anyone, anywhere in the world, was a way to get folks to belong.

So I started with the first…

Taken with my Minolta Hi-Matic 7s 35mm film camera. (Film: Kodak Gold 200) My Raleigh Superbe is soon to be a member of my Five Year Club, bikes that I've had for that time period. The Crested Butte and Schwinn Heavy Duti have passed those milestones, the Bantam will soon. I got my hands on… Continue reading My Raleigh Superbe at (almost) five years: A superb bike!

Re-entering the world of film photography: Minolta Hi-Matic 7s

It has become a pattern for this century: The first year of the new decade (and yes, I consider 2020 the first year of the '20's) I find a new nerdy obsession. The aughts saw the introduction of my love of trains, especially when it came to personal travel. And while I liked bikes and… Continue reading Re-entering the world of film photography: Minolta Hi-Matic 7s

Letter Writing Month Returns!

Hello friends! February is Letter Writing Month. What’s that? It’s simple. Here are the “official rules” from the website: In the month of February, mail at least one item through the post every day it runs (which in the US is every day except Sundays and Washington’s Birthday on Monday February 17th- my notes.) Write a postcard, a… Continue reading Letter Writing Month Returns!

Weekend Recap: Three Speed Pub Crawl (Sat 1/25) and Palm Tree Ride (Sun 1/26)

What a weekend! It was what I needed after a week of rain and lots of work. As Mr. Rhodes has noted, despite a forecast that didn't seem that promising, we got two days of mostly decent weather (at least during the day, it rained pretty hard later on Saturday night.) After a pretty wet… Continue reading Weekend Recap: Three Speed Pub Crawl (Sat 1/25) and Palm Tree Ride (Sun 1/26)
