Why yes, I took a bunch of photos during my most recent bike tour! And yes, most of them were on film. I decided to bring two of my smallest cameras along with me: my Olympus Pen EES-2 would handle color, the Olympus XA2 black and white.
I used tried-and-true Kentmere 400 in the XA2. The shots came out predictably decent. But for color, I decided to go with slide film again. My experience shooting slide film on the Pen EES-2 during my Columbia Gorge bike overnight in May went well, so I figured it’d be fine. However, I decided to use different stock this time around: Fuji Provia 100 and Fuji Sensia 100. Both were expired but kept cold over the years.
The results? Not as great as last time. The May trip was reliably sunny, but going to the Coast, even in the middle of August, resulted in more cloudy and misty weather, not ideal for ISO 100 speed slide film that I had to use pretty much at that speed only. I used a warming filter, but that wasn’t enough. And even in the sun, anytime I shot open water I got blown-out images. Slide film is notoriously fickle, and this time it bit me. I probably should have used a different camera, as I’m guessing the more primitive selenium cells don’t meter as well as CdS or equivalent. And even though the stock was “cold stored”, it definitely showed its age, especially the Sensia. Fresh slide film may have fared better. But in reality, I should have just taken color negative stock, which has more latitude. Live and learn.
In any case, I did get some decent photos from the trip. But I was hoping to maybe make this tour into a zine, just like what I did with the Willamette Valley Tour in July. That’s not going to happen. So please enjoy the pics in the dynamic flickr album below, or click here.
