My year in photos: Finding my “top nine”

It's become a thing on Instagram: Get the "Top Nine" app, which will tell you your nine most popular posts of the year. "Popular" meaning "most likes". I did it, and this is what I got: of the nine pics involve bicycles. That's no surprise, my IG is bicycle-centric. Posts without bikes aren't usually... Continue Reading →

Looking ahead to 2021: A blueprint for the Society

Society Of Three Speeds

Hello, friends of three speeds! I hope you all are well. 2020 was not an easy year, and the least I can hope for is that 2021 will be better. As the year comes to a close, it’s natural for me to think about what lies ahead. So here’s a blueprint for what should happen. Of course, things can change so this is just an outline of what I hope to be.

Rides. Let’s get this out of the way: I won’t be leading any rides until the pandemic shows signs of departing. I’ve thought about trying to do small rides with limited ridership, but right now I don’t feel comfortable even with that. My hope is that I can be able to do one ride in 2021. Let’s see…

Membership. The supply of membership goodies from when I relaunched the kit in late 2018 has nearly been exhausted. Whatever…

Looking back at 2020: A Society End-Of-Year Report

Society Of Three Speeds

Hello, friends of three speeds! What a year this turned out to be. I doubt that any of us would have figured the year would turn out the way that it did. “May you live in interesting times” someone once said.

And yes, this was not the 2020 that the Society was hoping for. But we made the best of it. And what did happen?

  • January: We had the Three Speed Pub Crawl on Saturday January 25th. Six people (incl. myself) showed up for this Scottish and Lunar New Year (Year of the Rat) themed ride. Stops included Scotch Lodge, Rose and Thistle, and Baerlic on NE Halsey.
  • April: This was supposed to be the month of the biggish Three Speed Day Ride and the Three Speed Adventure April Challenge. But pandemic put the kibosh on the former and sapped enthusiasm for the latter. Instead, I did a five-week photo…

A look back at the year known as 2020

Self-portrait, 29 November 2020. Olympus 35 RD, Kodak Colorplus 200. Hello, friends! It's customary for me to have an "end of year review" post on this blog. And man, this was quite the year. I don't think most people would call 2020 their best year unless they were some sort of sadist/masochist, or perhaps they're... Continue Reading →

Three Speed October 2020: A Report

Society Of Three Speeds

Hello friends! Here is the long-awaited round-up of this year’s Three Speed October. This was the first year of the “mail in journal” system, and it worked great. I was really prepared for push-back, but 63 people registered for the challenge, so I must have done something right! In any case, the challenges from here on out will work this way.

As I said above, 63 people registered. Of those, 49 successfully completed the Challenge, 5/7ths of the registrants! Very nice. Most everyone this time around was in the United States, but we did have four participants from outside the US. We had one participant each from: the UK, Belgium, Denmark, and Japan. (We did have a few registrants from Canada, but I have never seen completed Journals from them.)

As far as I can tell, everyone completed the challenge within the rules. A few people were confused by the…

Minolta SRT-101: An update

I got my Minolta SRT-101 back in October. This was my first SLR and I really took to it. But astute readers (or followers of my flickr photostream) may notice that despite being taken with it, I haven't used it since early November. What's up? Well, I took the SRT-101 with me when Emee, the... Continue Reading →
